The Jobs We Could Be Getting But Aren’t

Asian male architect are feeling sick and tired or exhausted from office work.

There’s a point where we start noticing it. The jobs we want to be doing … And the jobs we’re actually getting … Don’t quite match.

We know we’re capable. We’ve done the work. We’ve built the experience. And yet, those bigger opportunities keep going somewhere else.

It’s Easy to Assume It’s About Skill

Our first instinct is to look inward at the work itself.

  • Maybe we need more experience.
  • Maybe we need to improve our craft.
  • Maybe we need to prove ourselves more.

And while growth is always part of it, that’s not usually the full story. Because when clients are choosing who to trust with larger projects, they’re not just evaluating skill. They’re evaluating risk.

The Questions Clients Don’t Say Out Loud

When someone is hiring for a bigger job, there are questions happening behind the scenes.

  • Is this person operating professionally?
  • Do they meet the proper requirements?
  • Are they established, or still figuring things out?
  • Can we trust them with something at this level?

Even if we never hear those questions directly, they’re shaping the decision. And this is where the gap starts to show.

Capability vs Positioning

A lot of us are capable of doing more than we’re currently being hired for. But capability alone doesn’t get us selected. Positioning does.

That means how we show up, how we’re perceived, and whether we meet the expectations tied to larger, more complex work.

And one of the biggest factors in that positioning is licensing.

The Shift That Happens When We Get Licensed

Once we move into a Builder License, something changes.

We’re no longer just someone who can do the work.

We’re someone who is recognized as qualified to do it.

That shift:

  • Builds trust faster
  • Removes hesitation from clients
  • Positions us for larger opportunities
  • Signals that we’re operating at a higher level

It’s not just a technical requirement. It’s a credibility move.

Why We Wait Longer Than We Should

A lot of us put this off.

We tell ourselves:
“I’ll do it when I need it.”
“I’ll handle it once bigger jobs start coming in.”
“I’m not quite there yet.”

But by the time we feel like we “need” it, we’ve already missed opportunities.

Jobs we could have landed … Clients we could have worked with … Growth we could have stepped into earlier.

This Is Where the Path Becomes Clear

One of the biggest reasons we hesitate is because we’re not sure what the process actually looks like.

  • What’s required?
  • How long does it take
  • What changes once we’re licensed?

That’s where the Michigan Institute of Real Estate makes it simple.

Our Builder License program is designed to break the process down into something clear and manageable. Instead of guessing our way through it, we can see exactly what’s involved and how to move forward.

And with our free infographic, we get a full visual breakdown of the path, which makes the next step feel a lot more approachable.

Bigger Jobs Don’t Just Appear

At some point, it clicks.

The jobs we want don’t just show up because we’re ready for them.

They show up when we’re positioned for them.

And that positioning is something we can control.

The Bottom Line

If we keep seeing opportunities pass us by, it’s worth asking a different question.

Not “Are we capable?”

But “Are we positioned for the level we want?”

For Michigan contractors, getting a Builder License through our Michigan Institute of Real Estate is often the step that closes that gap and opens the door to the work we’ve been ready for all along.
